Parents have always been the most protective of their children. They are a gift to us from God and all they want is for us to be happy, successful, and live life to the fullest. They make selfless sacrifices and give us so much but they never ask for something in return. You may not have been that perfect child or you want to improve your relationship and be a better one. Here are tips to create a better relationship with parents
Communicate with them
If you are away, make sure that you call them daily if not weekly to know if they are ok and also let them know how you are doing. Let them feel that you are there for them just like they are there for you. If you are going through any challenges notify them, and talk about it. If it’s not too serious let them know you are brave enough to handle them on your own. Consult them when making a major decision and let them know you value their insights. Sometimes just hearing your voice gives them a peace of mind
Show Responsibility
Ask if they need any help and help around the house, if you have small siblings take care of them and help them with homework. If your parents are elderly, give them massages and make sure they are comfortable. Follow up to make sure their bills are taken care of
Be Honest
The best base of any good relationship is honesty. Do not keep any secrets from them. If you have done anything wrong, let them know, they are your parents and will understand and probably advise you on the best thing to do
Share memories and create new ones
On a lazy afternoon, pull out photo albums and look back at all the fun times you have had, and have a good laugh. Let them know how those days impacted your life. Spend some time with them to create new memories by going for walks or having home movie nights. If you can, plan a trip/vacation together
Give gifts
A gift helps to show love. You can make a DIY or buy something for them. This will go a long way in making them feel appreciated and thought about especially if it’s on their birthday or anniversary. Let them know that you appreciate them and are glad that they are your parents
Visit
You could be caught up with work or other activities but make sure that you set some time to go visit your parents. You can plan with your siblings to be having family dinners every month or on special occasions like the Christmas holidays. Always find time for what is important. Don’t look back and regret the things you did not do
