The human brain is one of the largest and most powerful body organs. It is the central organ of the human nervous system. It weighs around 1.4kgs and in terms of length it is around 15cm. Stroke occurs when the blood supply to the part of your brain is interrupted or reduced preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients. As a result, the areas of your body they control are also affected. For example, if you have visual problems, the stroke will have damaged the area of your brain responsible for your vision. Cognitive impairment and memory loss following stroke diagnosis are common symptoms that significantly affect the survivor’s quality of life. There are ways in which you can improve memory loss after stroke:

  • Stay mentally active engage your brain in activities that make the brain activate by playing games that require you to use your brain, whether as simple as checkers or complex as chess, can help you regain your memory.
  • Get plenty of sleep; sleep plays an important role in your brain health it helps clears abnormal protein in your brain and consolidate memories which boast overall memory and brain health.
  • Eat a Mediterranean diet; the diet you eat plays an important role in brain development omega fatty acid found in extra virgin oil and other healthy fats are vital for your cell to function correctly.
  • Exercise regularly; physical activity benefits the brain it increases heart rate, which pumps more oxygen to the brain. Exercise also promotes brain plasticity by stimulating growth of new connections between cells in many important cortical areas of the brain.
  • Work with a speech specialist; aside from helping those who have trouble with speech due to stroke, speech-language therapy enhance recovery by stimulating the brain to make neural connections from uninjured parts of the brain to those part of the brain affected.
  • Get organized; making it easy to see items you need for daily activities will help you remember what you need to do and when to do it.

The onset of stroke is dramatic and discouraging event both for the person having the stroke and for their family. A person may go from complete independence to complete dependence in a matter of minutes but with all this worrying trends neuroscientist have come up with ways to improve brain activity and this will really encourage families to know that their loved once will one day have their memories back and live a normal life.
